Instructions on Downloading and Installing Netscape
(NOTE: This is for upgrading upto and including version 1.22(PC) and 1.12 (MAC))
IF UPGRADING TO VERSION 2.0, CLICK HERE
The first thing you need to do is to get the software:
Click on the icon to the right to go to the Netscape Software Arhive page....

(WARNING: Netscape is a BUSY site, it may take a while.)
- Select the operating system that you are using.
- Select the version of Netscape that you wish to download.
- Select the continent (North America maybe?) that you are downloading from.
- Then Netscape will give you a list of FTP sites.
These File Transfer
Protocol sites are constantly being hit by users so you may get a busy message. What you need to do is to keep trying.
- When you get in, a screen will come up saying that Netscape has encountered an unknown file type. Save to disk is the option that you want to hit.
- Then it will prompt you for a location to put the file.
My suggestion: Put it into a directory that is empty. I like to create a "junk" directory for such files. The reason for this is that you will be deleting this file later
- Now you can go get a cup of coffee, watch TV, or something because this will take any where from 30-60 minutes or more depending on the speed of your modem and how busy Netscape is.
- When the file is done, exit out of Netscape. Then I would suggest getting off-line so you can save some time on-line.
- Find the file you just downloaded in the "junk" directory that you put it in. This file will have to be run to install Netscape. Follow the instructions below that pertain to your operating system:
BEFORE INSTALLING ANY VERSION OF NETSCAPE, A GOOD PROCEDURE IS TO COPY YOUR BOOKMARKS TO A BACKUP DIRECTORY. You can always "import" them back, but this ensures that Netscape doesn't erase the bookmarks that you've set!
MACINTOSH
- The file that you downloaded is most likely called Netscape x.x installer (where the x's are the version number). This file needs to be run to install the program.
- The program will ask you for a folder to install the software in.
My Suggestion Either create a folder of its own on the desktop or put into a folder with the other programs that you use for the Internet. It makes it easier to find fast.
- When it is done, the only items that need to be checked are the news server, mail server, and home page.
- news.fci.net for the news server.
- mailhost.fci.net for the mail server.
- http://www.fci.net for the home page.
- Now, if you like, you can trash the old version of Netscape.
- With that all finished, you can now get on line, and test out the new software!
MS Windows 3.1, 3.11, 95
- The file that you downloaded is a self-extracting file. First you need to double click on the file and run it. What will happen is the file will bring up a DOS window and you will see lines of text flow across your screen with a percentage behind t
hem.
This is the files extracting from the main file.
- Second you will need to run setup.exe from inside of Windows.
- Next it will ask for a directory to install the software into.
My Suggestion:I would choose something like c:\fcinet\newnet to keep all of the internet files under the same structure.
- In Windows 3.1 and 3.11, it will ask for a Program Group that you'd like to put the icon in. At first it will suggest or highlight a Netscape group. This will create a new program group just for Netscape. You can either do this or place it in the
Fcinet group.
- In Windows '95 it will create a window with the icons in it.
- The new Netscape will use the old netscape.ini so the settings should be the same. If not, the only items that need to be checked are the news server, mail server, and home page.
- news.fci.net for the news server.
- mailhost.fci.net for the mail server.
- http://www.fci.net for the home page.
- Now, if you like, you can delete the old directory that has the old Netscape.
- With that all finished, you can now get on line, and test out the new software!
